Santa and his elves visit a soup kitchen on 54thStreet 
 
Santa, hisjolly hat
sagging fromhis hand.
Elves lined upbehind him.
Hundreds inline before them,
hundreds inline behind,
until thesilent swish of well-oiled hinges
announces thefood is ready
for some toeat.
 
Will the foodrun out
before Santareaches the door?
Will the elvesgo hungry?
Do New York’s childrencare,
huddlingtoyless, 
with only ashesto warm them?
Will a red-noseRudolph,
that messengerof a still-born revolution,
swoop in tosave the day?
Or is itbusiness as usual,
the Dowcreeping up like
deaths fromexposure,
powered only bythe mendacity of
hope?
